Vultures Swarm

The Sheriff Debacle

Show me the Money is what the Lake Worth Police officers said last night. It’s only about the money. The Sheriff’s Department said the same thing to Lake Worth residents—if you want us, you pay dearly even though we can’t guarantee anything much different on your city streets. If you need special services that we already provide to you, they will now be provided quicker rather than a turn-around time of 30 minutes, as one Lake Worth policeman told me. There were plenty of them in the audience. I have to wonder if the criminals knew that all the cops would be at this meeting last night. They were all vultures hanging around for the kill.

The auditorium was packed full of police, union reps and those who are just fed up with the amount of crime on our city streets. The mentality was, let’s do something; anything is better than what we have now.

We have been talking about the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department merger since November, as Commissioner Vespo reminded us. The Commission calls a special meeting to vote on the Sheriff Contract and guess what—a lot of the crucial information was missing. But even worse than that, the top people there could not provide it…could not tell us how many more men would be on the street, if any. Commissioner Vespo was appointed as the Liaison between the City and the Sheriff’s Department. Why did he come to a meeting without the facts? Mayor Clemens just wanted the Sheriff no matter what. Commissioner Lowe told us the truth when she said that nothing was going to change.

What we do know is that we will have the exact same 91 men. No one could tell us how we are going to be safer; whether we will have any more shifts on the street. They have no idea. When you come down to signing a Contract and you don’t have the answers and you are told that they will fill in the blanks later, don’t you think that this would be a very big RED flag to say NO?

The next thing we know is, it will cost us $1 million a year more for the next 3 years. Now this entire merger came about because these three Commissioners, (Mayor Clemens, Vespo and Lowe) told us that we can no longer afford our own police department. Confusing? It gets worse.

Now, in order to pay the County for our exact same ninety-one officers we already have, our tax millage will go up: 8 mils the first year; 9 mils the 2nd year and 10 mils the 3rd year. We are capped at 10 mills by law and we will now have the fine distinction of being the highest taxed city in the State of Florida.

Can you imagine what this will do to our property values? Do you think that anyone will actually want to buy in our City when he can buy at the town adjacent to ours that has its own police department and its millage rate is projected to be 3.2395, a reduction of 52.51%. And guess what again? Lantana does not own its own Utility as does Lake Worth.

So, to round this up, same number of men, a million dollars more a year, millage at its peak. We are a vulnerable city with a lot of crime and the Sheriff knows that. The vultures were just waiting for that taste of blood but now have to buzz around for another two weeks in order to pick the bones of Lake Worth when the Contract comes back to the Commission.

The only thing that upsets me is the fact that, once again, our Dais votes on something that is not complete. And what do we have a city attorney for if he let's them enter into a legal agreement with blank lines?

I still don't care what color the uniforms are. What I do care about is we have city leadership that seems to put us in legal situations without legal advice, or at least compitent legal advice.

I wonder if anyone on the Dais wants to buy my house for a price that will be about.....mmmm, wait, I am still thinking, I'll let you know after you decide to buy it or not. I'll even hold the mortgage, but at a rate that I will tell you after you sign the mortgage agreement. In fact I'll even let you see what it looks like inside once you go through the closing.....

Can this get any worse? Did they give any reason why the Sheriff would be better? I don't recall one. This is the first step towards becoming unicorporated.

If we ever had a need to take over the CRA it is now. We definitely need to get the downtown out of the CRA district and keep that tax for our operational budget. Who is responsible for all this mismanagement?

Come swarm with me, come grind the carver.
Come paw the skin, come slay the harvest.
Come lick the sky, come reach the heavens.
Each grain of flesh, each drop of pleasures.

The dustcloud of our lust,
Redeemed in hate.
Deoderize our claws of rot.
Wash them clean of taste.

...And we swarm towards the sun or the creedence of it.
...And we whip the sky for blessings or for the joy of it.

I was at the sheriffs meeting, surrounded by cops. (Yeah guys ,the haircuts, mustaches, would have given you away even if you and your accompanying spouses rudeness had not ).I have ALWAYS ,up to this point, supported our police men and women at every chance. Not any more. The rude, disgusting behavior on display from these supposed LAW ENFORCEMENT officers was incredibly embarrassing for me,as a citizen who was genuinely confused about what was best for me as a taxpayer to do,to witness.Make no mistake, the bottom line for these people is their paychecks. Period. Good luck to this group who acted more like rowdy frat boys at a party than adults.

People make irrational decisions during desperate times. Crime is out of control. Everyone knows someone who has been robbed or worse. My house was broken into. If you think it's going to get any better for us here without MORE COPS ON THE STREET, then you are living in a fantasy world. If you think that we are not going to be close to bankrupt for making this deal for LW, you are truly not playing with a full deck.

I would just like to see some police on our streets. Do you think that they go out mostly after dark?

To Stafford, Wes, Jack and the boyz--Time will tell who "won" this one. That is a very strange word to use by you. It makes me wonder if common sense even exists. Let's just all pray that the City, for once, did the right thing. Do you people have a crystal ball too? Talk about spaced out. I can see a cop saying, well golly gee, I just got a raise so I will now be 7% more efficient.
