It's time to know when to count our losses - by Lynn Anderson

It's time to know when to count our losses

There are two things that our politicians do very well here in Lake Worth: spend money and hire expensive, top legal counsel to help ensure their success over the rights of citizens as well as to tell the world that they are right afterall.

This morning I read where the City of LW wants to hire an environmental law firm out of Tallahassee to lobby the Department of Environmental Protection. The DEP protects Florida’s air, water and land and it is the very agency in place to protect us from those bad decisions made by politicians. Who contacted this law firm? I suspect that the firm might have been recommended by The League of Cities that “provides a wide array of services and programs to local government elected and appointed officials.” This is just my guess. We seem to revert to them for guidance when our four staff attorneys don’t have the answers. But regardless of whom recommended this law firm to strong arm the DEP, why are local politicians willing to even consider this in light of everything that has been said at city commission meetings by the citizens, everything that has been written about the destruction of our coral reefs in the newspapers, and after listening to the PB County Reef Rescue on this topic. Why? Because they have spent so much money on it and can’t conceive of the fact that it was money ill spent. And even if they would admit amongst themselves that a previous commission made a mistake, they would rather spend money for a law firm to intimidate a State Agency to cover up their faulty judgment.

It is time to start counting our losses for an uninformed decision made five years ago on this Reverse Osmosis system. The politicians have spent millions of our dollars and now they are seeking a permit? It is also time for the Mayor to stop blaming the South Florida Water Management District and the Department of Environmental Protection for the dilemma the city now faces.

My message to our city politicians–quit now and count your losses.
