Lake Worth Politics >> Lake Worth: Power Structures

The commission is 3-2 divided along a fundamental vision for the city. Of course not all is black and white but any grey areas are short lived as the two sides try to win public support. In the current dynamic, grey areas are quickly driven to black and white, Cave and Pave, anti development, and pro development. And there is nothing in place to offer any hope of improving this breach between the two groups because there is no positive way for them to articulate their fears and inform the people except to attack and discredit the other side. It's just another episode in the Hatfield versus McCoy war.

For example, what compromise can be made on the beach? None that I see except for one possibility: that Greater Bay will drop out and the people are actually asked for the first time as to what they want to do with their beach.

Concerning development, there might be some flexing margins there if one or the other side is willing to compromise on their fundamental perspective but if it touches a sensitive nerve, you can bet it will raise the hair on the backs of those committed to positions already known.

So, without a Public Engagement System to clearly articulate issues and to channel these otherwise divisive energies into positive information output... this may not be so much a new beginning as it might be just the beginning of the next skirmish. The minority leader has been struck down but the movement is intact and ready and able to engage.

Marc increased his following by picking up undecided and new voters which is a tribute to the feet on the ground that worked for him. Jeff on the other hand, picked up the expected 4% from Mary which was just enough to squeek him over the top but without any comfort zone. And it doesn't appear that he picked up any new or undecided support during the two week interim between elections.

With that in mind, nothing in place at the moment will diffuse "politics as usual" in LW.
